iPort Makes iPad Into the Ultimate Light Switch

iPort now offers the CM-IW2000 in-wall control mount for the iPad. For custom homes with Wi-Fi home automation, an iPad installed in the right location becomes a sleek touch-panel control center seamlessly integrated into the wall. Music, lights, video and temperature can be adjusted from any room with a mounted iPad.

Apple iPad iPort Wall Mount

iPort can be mounted horizontally or vertically and provides installation flexibility with up to 30 feet between the unit and power source. The product provides constant power to the installed iPad as well as access to the power button via the outer bezel. The bezel is secured to the inner mounting assembly with a magnetic frame.

The home button is exposed next to the bezel, providing access to standard apps such as weather and stocks from your wall. iPort comes with the mounting cradle assembly and magnetic faceplate, connector/charging board with RJ-45 jack, power wall plate, and power supply for $499.

According to iPort documentation, once the hole is cut and wires are run to the cavity, the iPad can be mounted in seconds with the iPort Roto-Lock mounting system. The iPad must be mounted in the wall near a strong Wi-Fi signal for proper operation.

We're guessing the audio out jack could also be wired up to a home entertainment system for the enjoyment of Pandora or other streaming applications, although the volume level would have to be preset since the controls can't be used once the iPad is mounted in the wall.

Although the iPad is designed to be a mobile device, it suits this application pretty well. The overall cost of a home automation or Wi-Fi control system would be much greater than the cool grand required to purchase an iPad and iPort, not to mention installation. iPort, located in San Clemente, California offers a similar in-wall mounting product for the iPod touch.
