Can I use the iPad on Verizon?

UPDATE: The iPad 2 will be produced in a CDMA version compatible with the Verizon Wireless network. This model hits stores on March 11, 2011.

UPDATE Jan 11, 2011: Verizon Communications CFO Francis Shammo announced today that Apple will manufacture iPads that will connect directly to the Verizon network. Recently the company has been offering Wi-Fi iPads in promotional bundles with MiFi portable hotspot units.

Rumor has it that Verizon and Apple are in talks to provide service for a future model of the iPad. Currently by all accounts the iPad hardware will not even support the Verizon network, so the answer is no.

Future iPad models could support the current Verizon network, or more likely Apple will wait until Verizon upgrades to a newer network (LTE) and then AT&T and Verizon will be using the same technology. In this case (not until at least 2011) one new iPad will work on both networks.

You could get a verizon mifi device and connect through it's wifi signal. This also works well with ipod touches and even iphones when your in areas with slow or no AT&T coverage.

I am using my wifi only iPad through Sprint via WIFI sharing on HTC Touch Pro 2. The pocket PC is running Tom Codon CM Wifi Internet Sharing (free download) which enables the phone as a wireless wifi router. I can connect my laptop, iPod Touch, and iPad at same time.

It works so well that I use Sprint network for internet at home (cable internet at work) and canceled iPad 3G order to get wifi. It saved $140 initially ($130 plus tax for difference in wifi and wifi/3G models) plus monthly service of about $30 with taxes. I also have unlimited data service with Sprint plan which is better than current 2GB limit of AT&T.

A negative is the Sprint phone battery runs down rapidly when used as a router so I keep it plugged in most of the time. I bought two spare batteries off ebay for $10 each when I am away from wall plug or car plug.
