What is the release date for the iPhone OS 4.0 / iOS 4 iPad firmware update?

UPDATE: iOS 4.2 comes to the iPad on Monday November 22, 2010 at 10AM PST.

Apple plans to release the new iOS 4 operating system (formerly known as iPhone OS 4) on the iPad in Fall 2010.

iOS 4 will ship on the iPhone 4 starting June 24. Existing iPhone 3G and 3GS customers can get the firmware update on June 21 for free. iPod Touch (except first generation) owners also receive a free upgrade.

As soon as we have more information on a release date for iOS 4 on the iPad we'll let you know.

Apple is full of bull. This is stupid. Where the h-ll is this update? This lovely machine is full of software holes and Apple is playing games with their cat and mouse delays.

Apple: Fix your damn software (who ever heard of a "computer" that won't let you delete email for an enterprise user in airplane mode and sync when reconnected?) or lose me as a customer on my next hardware purchase.

Seems like it may now be around Thanksgiving for the update.
I recently read it may be the day before the holiday.
But then again, they still say "November" so it's still right,...technically,...grrr...I'm so anxious.

In the past, last day of the month.

Where's the iPad update???

November 12 at 10:00am (California time)

That is when the PROGRAM will check for updates - there is no link between that date and reality!!!

Mine says next check 11/11/2010

iTunes always randomly checks for updates. That date just means that iTunes will check again on that day. It has nothing to do with the release date of new software.

Does anyone knows when exactly in nov. They gonna release they ios for ipad ?

I read yesterday that it will be released today an available tomorrow.

My iTunes says I'm up to date and next check will be on the 8th

tomorrow ios4 is coming to ipad because if you check your itunes and connect your ipad it says: itunes is going to check for updates on : 2 november 2010
so get ready and dont sleep

That has nothing to do with it

When we bought iPad, iPad should have come with folders and multiple-tasking in the first place!

Given that this device can only use app downloaded from Apple and there is a what you could call an iPhone/ touch app limit, oh wait, not true, they are running ios 4, this does suck. I use mine for work, have those apps, home games apps, travel apps, etc,. It is over full. Guess when they do release ios4 for the iPad Apple will release/ announce a new iPad, so they can rob the joy, or is that suck the joy, out of this whole experience of buying into the first buy of the iPad.

It always says its going to check for updates tomorrow, yesterday mine said its next check was today and today it says tomorrow

It automatically checks when you're connected at the specified time. Sometimes you don't even know it's checking.

People really need to stop whining. Seriously, people seem to look for any little thing they can pick at, regardless of if it is valid reason to be upset, and harp on it. Not having folders is NOT that big a deal. And even if it were? Suck it up. We'll be getting it soon enough. Personally, I'm fine with waiting. The more time they spend working on the update, the better it will be when we get it.

I have like 340 apps so far. I can only see 11 pages of them, but I have the ones I use the most on the pages, sorted via iTunes, and the rest I search for. There is no big deal in this. Geez.I don't even know all I have. I just download lots of free apps because they look interesting, have actually only really heavily used about 20 of them regularly, some suck and I will eventually delete them.
I love os4 on my iTouch and cant wait for it on the iPad but you don't see me whimpering and whining because I don't have it right this second on the iPad. Not the critical. If I actually know what I want I just use Search. Initially, I freAked when all my pages were filled and I didn't see what I downloaded on them, but them I did search and all are there.

This is most definitely the longest nonsensical anonymous self conversation that I have ever seen!

Wondering.. I think Apple owes us at least the month on which we can expect it, not just "this fall".

As for Apps over-population, why can't you just group some of them into folders? Like News where you can place abc news, NY Times, BBC, etc.?

hmmm, maybe you cant put them into folders because the folders feature is in iOS4...

Thanks for this great little tip - I have the same issue with having too many apps to see past my 11 pages. I had no idea they would still operate if you couldn't see them. I'm going to play with this - there goes another three hours of my day! This was really helpful!

Their is absolutely no reason for apple to hold back on OS4 for the iPad other than self interest. Apple seldom does what's best for customers. Their main concern is maintaining a controlled and closed platform.

Or maybe they are making a more usable in-depth system that can increase the potential of this as of now glorified "Big Phone". Don't get me wrong I enjoy mine, but it has not yet reached quasi net book status, or the fact that I can't have Pandora going while I'm typing an email... lame. My hope / vote is much more than just folders and multi-tasking.

I have multi tasking, folders unlimited apps and much more. Just jailbreak it at
Http://jailbreakme.com

In safari and u are done.

Actually the ipad was not available to the developers of the 4.0 update until later in the game. So they will most likely release it for iPad in the 4.1 update with the phones.

I have a 64GB iPad that I cannot fit anymore apps on b/c it is full, and I have a ton of memory left... without the App folders, Apple has basically screwed the iPad user.... So we have to wait to fall to add anymore apps... not fair at all...!!!

Don't you back up your iPad onto your PC, be it MAC or other? You do know that once you've done that, you can delete/remove apps on your iPad and later, if necessary, restore them? This, in essence, would give you virtually unlimited space to download and install apps, subject to the space available on your main computer, of course.

I normally don't reply to posts in forums like this but the comment about the iPad not supporting enough applications is one of the most stupid I have ever heard.

That person is what developers call an edge case. We area always aware of the needs of an edge case however we actively choose not to accommodate these people because it is not reasonable to invest potentially significant effort to deliver features that only a minority of users desire. Furthermore the introduction of such features could degrade the user experience of the majority.

I would suggest that your usage pattern is flawed and that you should reconsider just how you are working with this device. Furthermore if you wish to do engage in what can only be considered freakish activity I think you should move to the Android platform where nobody cares about user experience.

Dude you just described why software is broken.... If you cant support principles in the abstract, then you have flawed designs. You better test your edge cases, because that's where security exploits come from... I should know i make a living off of it....

You keep saying edge cases don't matter, and ill keep rooting your boxen

Rooting your boxen
WTF? What language is that?

You are the true freak!

I have an iPad 64Gig and have about 3 pages of Apps. If you have a bunch of Apps you don't use then get rid of them. If you MUST have so many Apps that they don't fit then maybe you need to carry around a MacBook instead of the iPad.

People are not happy unless they are complaining about things. Apple has come out with technology changing items that everyone tries to copy. There was NOTHING on the market like the iPhone, once it was released all other phone companies started making their clones. The iPad was released and now we hear about HP coming out with theirs, etc.

GO APPLE!!!!

Drop $850, oops, drop another on a MacBook. Neatly ignores Apples hype about the iPad. How much money have they made? There is no excuse for not having the OS available sooner. As it stand a it is just an older idevice, what has it been, almost half a year?

You can search for any app on your iPad. The number of icons is limited but the apps are not. If you have downloaded an app you can run it from the find screen. This is actually faster than looking for it on 10 different screens. If you want to be clever you can set up a simple database with all of your apps and group them that way. HandBase is a good app for that. Some simple flat file database could do the same thing.

you can still download more, you just have too search for them on the search page, they're still they're there just not on a home screen

"Because its full", What the he!! would you need that many apps that you have already filled all the pages. Store them on itunes and use the ones you use the most...delete the rest on pad.

I agree no one could possibly need that many apps on an iPad it's is also possible that apple is making more modifications to 4.0 for iPad than iPhone since ipad has more screen real-estate = more potential features in multitasking particularly

Who are you to decide how many apps a person needs or wants? Seriously? This is not a communist nation. If people want 500 apps and have the memory for it they Apple should get the heck out of the way and introduce the proper OS to allow it.

Just to elaborate on the difference between democracy and communism... "it is not reasonable to invest potentially significant effort to deliver features that only a minority of users desire" is meeting the needs of the majority. That's democracy at its finest. If Apple was "communist" as you seem think, they would decide what apps you would need and the App Store would contain only apps created by Apple. Consider this a clue for the clueless.

That was eloquently put... my sentiments as well...

You don't really understand what Communism is, do you?

It seems to me people who complain about the limitations of these devices share a common insane sense of entitlement. I remeber when there were no updates. When the only way to improve your computing device was to get your screw driver out and make it work. Remeber this the world owes you nothing at all. You have to get out there and get what you want. Jailbreak if thats the method you choose. But for goodness sake if all your going to do is complain then sell your ipad and shut up.

Excellent observation. You nailed it! But sadly, there are those that live to complain.

I am going to sue Volkswagen because my Beetle does not have as much trunk space as the Jetta wagon. As a user, I should be able to put as much luggage in my car as I want!

;)

Who are you to assume he's not posting from a communist nation? Oh the arrogance of English speaking net users. You are not American by any chance are you?

Those "Americans" surely get under your skin dont they?
