Will the iPad play/support AVI video files?
Yes, if the AVI file is compatible with the Motion JPEG (M-JPEG) standard. Apple users may find this surprising since the company's previous mobile devices did not support AVI files.
This is the first time Apple has provided support for video playback beyond MPEG-4 and QuickTime formats on iPhone OS. PCM stereo audio is also supported in AVI files on the iPad.

iPad supports some types of cameras output video files, displaying AVI footage via the camera card reader accessory. That's to say, it won't let you watch common AVI files on your iPad. So an easy-to-use avi to iPad Converter s a must-have.
http://www.avitoipad.net/Millions of .avi movie files out there....BUT....you can't watch them on the iPad without first CONVERTING them to an Apple format. Support for avi natively just makes sense. But...user-friendly isn't a part of the "experience"... Apple invented the word STUBBORN.

I use a program called power director. I import my avi and then produce it as an MP4. It took about 20 minutes for a 1 hour avi file...but it was successful! I hope this helps.
Tunebite also does a good job of converting both audio and video formats to a multitude of formats which the iPad can use!
VLC does it natively using iTunes file sharing.
