3G concerns

I'm getting the Wifi+3G but have a question. Anyone know if the iPad will tell you signal strength before you actually sign up for data? I'd imagine you'd have to have service to sign up with a CC in the first place. But I'm used to mobile devices always showing signal bars.

I doubt that the iPad will do thsi by default, but maybe AT&T will come out with an app that does?

Don't count on it. Apple keeps a lot of secrets w/the iPad.....

The iPad should work with EDGE, too.

I would guess that if you have a strong enough signal to sign up with a credit card, then it should work fine.

I always see the TV commercials that compare the Verizon coverage area with the AT&T coverage area, and the AT&T coverage looks so sparse in comparison. Would there be a problem getting coverage in major East Coast cities like Washington DC and Boston? Is it mainly the more rural areas that don't get good 3G coverage?

Overblown.

What's the stat, AT&T 3G covers 95% of all Americans? Something like that. Verizon's map is a marketing gimmick. I've had AT&T 3G on my iPhone for years, without any issues. I'm in mainly populated areas -- but so are most people.

There's no AT&T 3G coverage where I live and I'm not exactly in the middle of nowhere (NW Indiana). The counties around me are covered but for some reason we've been skipped over.

Just posted about this. Yeah it tells you signal strength all the time. Unless you turn off 3G in the settings.

Re: 3G concerns

So I tried to register my iPad 3G today and found out that since My address tried to my credit card is not in an area where we have 3G coverage they will not let me register. At first I thought it was an issue with having a Po box, so I called AT&T they told me that I need a real street a dress tied to my credit card. Well we have one just for shipping, but since the USPS does not recognize it neither does AT&T. So I got sent to the iPad support folks at AT&T. They told me that since I did not have 3G at my house then I could not activate my account and I might need to send it back!!!! Anybody have any suggestions I'm pissed.

Send it back? Incredible. Did they suggest you pick up an AT&T microcell for the house? Assuming you have broadband this would give you a 3G signal at your property.
