iPad travel through Canada

I'll be traveling through Canada twice in the next month and would like to avoid AT&T's pricey data roaming charges.
What are the options for purchasing a micro-sim in Canada?
Do any of the carriers NOT charge an activation fee?

Bell?
Rogers?
Telus?

Will a Canadian Apple store mail me the sim card?

What are my options?

Thanks

You're not going to be able to do any of this unless your iPhone is jailbroken and unlocked. Is it?

If not, start there.

The previous poster didn't read your question.

No jailbreaking required. Just remove the ATT sim and replace it.

I've been researching this myself for a trip to British Columbia....it seems once you are there, you can buy a Telus sim for $10 and then buy a month's worth of time for $20 without a contract. I haven't found a way to have it sent to me in advance of the trip, short of asking a Canadian friend to do it.

I don't think Apple is going to help on this.

See this page: Telus iPad plan

If you find something better, a reply will be appreciated.

Warning.

The problem with a US citizen getting iPad cell service from a Canadian company (Bell, Rogers et al) is that the automated sign-in process requires that you have a credit card with an associated Canadian billing address. I had service for two months with Bell because they initially had a human sign people up for the service but now they have gone to an automated system and I cannot get more months of data.

I think you will find getting the SIM card is easy. (I got a free one at an Apple store) The problem people have is trying to sign up for service when they are from the US.

There are rumors that American Express might work with the idea that when you putting a billing address in with American Express the software actually does not check that that number actually has the same billing address. So you put some random Canadian address in.

There are rumors that getting a pre=paid credit card in Canada would work as that is not associated with an address and again you just enter a random Canadian address.

I will try these solutions but I do not know if they will work.

Suffice to say, it is not a walk in the park. If people have other experiences, I would like to hear them. By the way, getting a Canadian VISA card is not easy as an American (ie close to impossible)

I've found a solution for anyone how wants to travel in the US and/or Canada using a WiFi only iPad and still get 3G coverage. The solution is not real cheap but does not require any contracts and provides a pay-as-you-go solution. What I did was acquire a CradlePoint PHS 300 modem (the older 3G version is less than $100) and a Virgin Mobile Broadband2Go MC760 Turbo-Stick, one for US and one for Canada. They're $80 each at Virgin Mobile shops (or website) and work only in the country they are purchased in. You can "top up" the sticks for $40/mo for unlimited data in either country with Virgin Mobile phone top-up cards purchased at super markets using cash. Then simply register your B2Go sticks online, from a desktop computer, at each country's respective Virgin Mobile website and top them up with your top-up cards purchased in each country. You may require a friend to buy them in each respective country and provide you with the top-up number code.

With the CradlePoint PHS300, your WiFi iPad easily recognizes it. After your B2Go MC760 turbo-sticks are registered online and topped up, simply insert the appropriate one, for the country you are in, into the USB port on the CP PHS300 and BINGO, you have full 3G coverage, with Sprint when in the US, or Bell Mobility when in Canada.

It does require about $260 in hardware and $40/mo for data but you then have an international 3G iPad (using a WiFi only iPad) without any contracts and you can buy data as needed. Works for me.
