Buying an iPad

I want to buy an iPad for my wife (our anniversary).
Is there any point in buying one if I only have Tiger OS X 10.4.11 at home

Can I sync a new iPad to my computer at my office (Snow Leopard) and still operate at home?

Am I missing smomething here, understanding how the iPad works and needs to be tied to a computer?

Congrats for your Anniversary and I must say your wife is lucky to get such a lovely gadget as gift. Operating ipad is as simple as other Apple product. Your wife will love it
