Ten One Design Demos Pressure-Sensitive iPad Drawing
Submitted by Fred Straker on Sun, 07/04/2010 - 11:32Ten One Design has developed some interesting software to simulate a pressure-sensitive screen on the iPad. The app works by measuring distance between the touch screen and a capacitive tip such as that found on the Pogo Sketch stylus.
In this demo video, different line widths are drawn by the same stylus, while finger and hand touches are masked out. This makes it possible to write on the iPad just like a notebook, even while resting your hand on the screen.
Another Missing iPad Feature: The Gyroscope
Submitted by Fred Straker on Wed, 06/30/2010 - 23:36Some iPad users may be disappointed that Apple's first generation tablet hardware is missing a camera or an SD card slot among other things. Much hype has surrounded the gyroscope chip included in the iPhone 4 and all of the cool things on the horizon that gyro-enabled apps will be capable of doing.

Turns out Apple likely nixed plans to include a gyroscope on the current model iPad and is saving the feature for an upgraded device. This photo shows an iPhone 4 gyroscope (highlighted on the left) and a similar empty space on the iPad circuit board (right side). According to UBMTechInsights analyst Steve Bitton, the pin arrangement on the iPad matches the InvenSense digital gyro. This was the first three-axis gyroscope chip to hit the market.

Apple, AT&T Face Class-Action Lawsuit Over iPad 3G Data Plans
Submitted by Fred Straker on Sat, 06/26/2010 - 10:02Lawyers have lined up behind iPad owners who feel that Apple and AT&T Wireless unfairly baited them into purchasing an iPad 3G with the promise of unlimited data plans. Since the iPad was launched, AT&T has announced the switch: unlimited data plans were due to be removed as an option on June 7. A class-action lawsuit has been filed in United States District Court representing consumers from several states.

Many users are finding that the iPad 3G unlimited data plan is still available, and AT&T has stated that users keeping their unlimited data plan paid every month would be able to keep the plan. A change was also made to the lower-tier plan, with a 250 MB cap reduced to 200 MB for the same price of $15.
Apple Sells Over 26 iPads Every Minute
Submitted by Fred Straker on Wed, 06/23/2010 - 22:17Nine more countries are scheduled to get the iPad in July, but in the meantime Apple is selling an average of 26 iPads every 60 seconds. This unbelievable clip means the total units sold is three million in only 80 days.

For comparison, it took two years for Amazon's Kindle to sell that many units. For those who like statistics, Apple has sold three million iPads over 9 times faster than Amazon has sold equal numbers of the Kindle.
Apple iPad OS 3.2 Vulnerable to Attacks?
Submitted by Fred Straker on Wed, 06/23/2010 - 00:51Now that there are three million iPads in the wild around the world, users are anxiously waiting for all of the updated features available in iOS 4 such as multitasking and folders. Apple has already announced that the firmware update will come to the iPad in Fall 2010. This latest mobile operating system launched on June 21 for late-model iPhone and iPod Touch owners.

What iPad fans might not realize is that the latest update to Apple's firmware patches a record 65 security holes and bugs. iPhone OS 3.0 fixed 46 different operating system vulnerabilities when it was launched around a year ago. Approximately half of the patches delivered with iOS 4 corrected serious issues.
iPad Production Problems, Samsung Joins LG
Submitted by Fred Straker on Mon, 06/21/2010 - 00:39There's still an iPad shortage, and Apple has reportedly hired another manufacturer to help alleviate supply problems. The shortage has to do with iPad touch screens, which are of the 9.7 inch LED IPS variety. There's just not enough of them to go around.

Apple is experiencing similar problems with its high-resolution iPhone 4 screen and just can't overcome production bottlenecks to meet overwhelming demand. LG Display, a South Korean company, has already shipped close to one million iPad displays in May. This is in addition to over 700k units shipped in April and almost 800k units shipped in February and March.
DIY: Connect Your iPad to Verizon Wireless
Submitted by Franklin Macey on Fri, 06/18/2010 - 00:57Looking for a faster connection? AT&T on the iPad got you down? All you need is an expendable Verizon Wireless MiFi and some electronics know-how to mod your iPad. You can kiss your warranty goodbye but in exchange your iPad will achieve download speeds six times faster than 3G and act as a Wi-Fi hotspot for other devices.

The modified iPad featured in this Dish Network Blog actually connects to the Verizon network via the MiFi's Wi-Fi signal, not by accessing the cellular data network directly. The MiFi internals are mounted inside the iPad frame, although this required removal of half the speaker resonating chamber.
Apple iPad 3G Hacker Arrested
Submitted by Fred Straker on Wed, 06/16/2010 - 23:51One member of the Goatse Security group that revealed an AT&T iPad 3G security breach has been detained after the FBI conducted a search of his property. The "computer security researcher" known as Weev was arrested in Arkansas for possession of LSD, cocaine, ecstasy, and a bunch of pills.

AT&T has accused the group of compromising its network and maliciously attacking its servers to steal data relating to 114,000 iPad 3G user accounts. Goatse Security claims it's providing a public service by exposing security holes, but the group has been under investigation by the FBI after pulling data from AT&T servers and reporting the story to the media.
AT&T's iPad 3G Security Breach: What it Means to You
Submitted by Chad Shmukler on Sat, 06/12/2010 - 22:55If you haven't already heard about the massive iPad security breach that was revealed late last week in an exclusive report by Gawker.com, here's the lowdown: an online security group exploited a vulnerability in AT&T's 3G network and through doing so gained access to at least 114,000 e-mail addresses and ICC IDs (integrated circuit card identifier), a digital identifier that associates SIM cards with the device they represent on AT&T's network. Topping the list of the 114,000 iPad 3G owners that were revealed to have been compromised were powerful CEOs, military personnel, political figures, entertainment personalities and more.
