The numbers are in and Apple has scored big sales gains in the third quarter of 2010. DisplaySearch researched the top selling mobile personal computers, and when the iPad is grouped with netbooks, notebooks and competing tablets, Apple dominates mobile PC sales in North America.
Apple ranks third globally in the same segment, with only HP and Acer beating the company by roughly three million units. In total, Apple shipped 6.3 million units during the third quarter of 2010 for a 12.4 percent market share.
The iPad now accounts for a whopping eight percent of all mobile PC shipments worldwide. When it comes to North American sales, some analysts have estimated that 45 percent of all iPads manufactured are sold in the US.
For those who doubt the iPad counts as a "mobile PC" DisplaySearch did break down their Quarterly Mobile PC Shipment and Forecast Report to look at non-iPad numbers. Not counting the iPad, Apple would have come in globally at eighth place in mobile PC market share instead of third.
The mobile PC market including tablets has grown to 55 million units sold in the third quarter of 2010. Tablets are expected to continue increased sales as they disrupt the computer market worldwide. For its part, Apple has been forecast to continue breaking its own records with the iPad. The company could sell up to 40 million iPads in 2011.
