A Dutch website decided to conduct a little experiment after complaints about the new iPad overheating started piling up on random Apple forums. Tweakers.net (translated) discovered that the lower left corner of the iPad 3 reaches 92.5 Fahrenheit (33.6 degrees Celsius), compared to the iPad 2 which reaches 83 Fahrenheit (28.3 degrees Celsius). According to Apple's specifications the iPad 3's official operating temperature is 32-95 degrees Fahrenheit (0-35 degrees Celsius).
Tweakers' test reveals that the iPad 3 is running hotter than the iPad 2, but it's staying within its operating requirements. The website blames the iPad 3's GPU as the culprit. The new iPad boasts a lot more power-hungry features, like the A5X chip with quad-core graphics, high-resolution Retina display and 4G capabilities... These are probably the reasons that it gets a bit toastier than its predecessor.
