Can I use the Apple Watch with the iPad mini?

The Apple Watch does not feature the hardware to perform most tasks, such as GPS or text messaging. However, it can do all these things when paired with an iPhone, but not an iPad or iPad mini. The Apple Watch only supports:

iPhone 6 Plus
iPhone 6
iPhone 5s
iPhone 5c
iPhone 5
