Niantic announced today that its App Store hit, Pokémon GO will receive a major update "later this week." The update will add 80 new Johto region Pokémon from the Pokémon Gold and Pokémon Silver video games. The new Pokémon will feature gender-specific variations, more ways to evolve, and feature more reactions while being caught.
Some Kanto region Pokémon will now be able to evolve into Johto region Pokémon, and PokéStops will include new items that you will need to evolve others. Other new features include the ability to select Berries and Poké Balls directly from the encounter screen, two new Berries for Pokémon to eat and new wardrobe items to dress your avatar.
Some players are still unhappy that Niantic has not added a real combat option, while others have taken to Twitter to express their happiness over the upcoming changes.
Dave Thier of Forbes called the update basically useless, citing a lack of any real PvP options or a single player campaign.

Pokémon GO is available for free on the Apple App Store.
