As expected, Apple announced a new 9.7-inch iPad at its education event in Chicago. The next-generation model features similar specs to the discontinued 9.7-inch iPad Pro. It even includes Apple Pencil support and a faster A10 Fusion chip. Current iPad Pro models, like the 10.5-inch, are powered by Apple's A10X chip, as a comparison. The 9.7-inch iPad does not ship with Smart Connector and True Tone display, like the pro models.
It is the first non-Pro model to include Apple Pencil support, making all available iPad models Apple Pencil ready.
The new model is available in WiFi-only and cellular models in 32GB and 128GB storage capacities. Apple did not reduce the price as some rumors predicted, but instead the company is offering a discounted price of $299 to schools. Regular consumers will still have to pay $329 for the 32GB WiFi model, and $459 for the cellular.
Other specs include a 2048-by-1536 at 264 ppi display, 8-megapixel camera, Touch ID, 3.5mm headphone jack and a Lightning connector .
The 9.7-inch 2018 model iPad is available starting today in 3 colors (Silver, Gold, Space Gray). It is available through apple.com, Apple Stores, Apple Authorized Resellers and select carriers (prices may vary)
