No iPad Mini! Apple Announces iPhone 5 and New iPods Instead

Tablet fans waiting for a smaller, more affordable iPad will have to wait a little longer. Apple did not announce the rumored 7-inch iPad as some hoped, instead they announced the long-awaited iPhone 5, a 2.5-inch iPod nano, and fifth-generation iPod touch on Wednesday in San Francisco.

There weren't many surprises during the iPhone 5 presentation as most of the next-generation rumors finally turned out to be true. The iPhone 5 does feature a hybrid metal and glass back, 4G LTE speeds and a larger 16:9 ratio in-cell touch display. Apple managed to make the new iPhone lighter and thinner without sacrificing battery life, and added a new and faster A6 processor. The iPhone 5 also stayed the same in price. The 16GB model will cost $199, the 32GB model is $299, and the 64GB version is $399. The iPhone 4S was reduced to $99, and the iPhone 4 is free with a new contract. Pre-orders for the iPhone open on September 14. Full shipping and availability will commence on Friday, September 21, and iOS 6 drops on September 19.

Apple Officially Announces iPad 3 Event

Well it looks like at least one iPad 3 rumor was correct. Apple will officially announce the next generation iPad next Wednesday, March 7, at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco at 10am PST. The invite's tagline reads "We have something you really have to see. And touch."

The next generation iPad is rumored to feature a high-resolution Retina Display (2048-by-1536 pixels), an improved camera and Apple's A5X chip with improved graphics engine. There have also been reports that Apple will announce an iPad mini, but I highly doubt it.

Steve Jobs Reveals Apple iPad 2 Details, March 11 Ship Date

Steve Jobs took the stage at today's Apple event to announce the next generation iPad. The iPad 2 features a 2X faster, power-sipping A5 dual-core processor and up to 9X faster graphics. Front and rear facing cameras for FaceTime video chat are included in a form factor that's 33 percent thinner than the original iPad.

Weight is reduced as well, with the iPad 2 shaving off 0.2 pounds from its predecessor. The device will ship in two colors, black and white with a metal back. White is pictured above in this photo from Engadget. Models will come in Verizon and AT&T cellular data versions for compatibility with either carrier's wireless technology.

iPad Sales Announced, New OS Coming This Fall

At today's iPhone 4 keynote speech, Steve Jobs announced that Apple has sold 450,000 iPads since launch day as of April 8. Those sales resulted in 600,000 iBooks downloads and no less than 3.5 million iPad application downloads to date. Not bad for less than a week.

In the US, Apple's share of mobile browser usage (Mobile Safari running in iPhone OS) totals 64 percent. The next closest competitor is Android OS with 19 percent, and BlackBerry comes in third with a 9 percent total. Apple has sold a total of 50 million iPhones and an additional 35 million iPod Touch devices, all running iPhone OS.
