Place Your Bets! Sky Bet Releases iPad 3 Odds

The online betting website SkyBet has released their odds for the upcoming iPad 3 specifications. I wonder what happens if Apple doesn't call their next tablet the iPad 3? Can you still collect if Tim Cook announces the "iPad plus"? SkyBet also forgot about the iPad mini, camera type and the size of the next generation tablet.

iPad 3 Specs

I would bet "Yes" on Retina display since many sources and leaks have pretty much confirmed it.

Analyst Believes iPad Mini Has Always Been a Part of Apple's Plan

After the iPhone 5/iPhone 4S fiasco I'm not convinced Apple is going to release an iPad mini this year. Apple didn't need a new low-end iPhone to compete with other smartphone manufacturers at the end of 2011 like a lot of analysts predicted they would. The iPhone 4S performed well, and the iPhone 3GS allowed them to compete in the low-to-mid end market without having to release a new affordable phone. However, some analysts still believe Apple will release an iPad mini to compete with the Kindle Fire in 2012.

iPad 3 Rumor

A Technology Business Research analyst believes Apple plans to release an iPad mini sometime this year. "I believe that's always been in the plan," Ezra Gottheil told Computer World. "Actually that's a good form factor for some users, and although they will also charge a premium above other similar-sized tablets, they want to protect that price flank."

iPad Case Manufacturers Already Selling iPad 2S Cases

Next generation iPad cases have already begun popping up in China. The latest comes from the case manufacturer Chinee, who claims Apple will release a slightly thicker iPad, possibly called the iPad 2S, sometime this year.

Case manufacturers have already led us astray with the iPhone 5, and now they're starting to contradict each other when it comes to the next generation iPad. An unnamed iPad case designer recently told Cult of Mac that the iPad 3 would be thinner, not thicker. However, Chinee claims to have inside information from sources within Appleā€™s supply chain. If Chinee is correct, the new iPad will be 1mm thicker than the iPad 2.

Next Generation iPad 2S Previewed at CES?

Sounds like those expecting a complete redesign of the iPad in the next generation hardware will be disappointed according to a new report. Apparently iLounge was lucky enough to get their hands on a prototype iPad, and the name iPad 2S is more appropriate than iPad 3 considering the profile of the device.

iPad 2S side view

According to the report, the next iPad is barely thicker than the current iPad 2 model, to the tune of one millimeter. The only visible change to the hardware is a larger rear camera, which resembles that of the iPhone 4S. This includes a silver ring around the camera lens.

Slightly Thicker iPad 3 in March?

So far the next generation iPad rumors have suggested Apple is working on a variety of smaller and thinner iPads, but a "reliable source" told iLounge a different story. The iLounge tipster said the iPhone, iPad and MacBook Pro will all be receiving redesigns in 2012.

iPad 3

The third-generation iPad will be thicker (0.7 mm) to accommodate the rumored dual OLED backlights, and it will be revealed in January followed by a March release. This is much a different story from the "iPad mini" and thinner iPad 2S rumors we've been hearing from other sources.

The iPad mini Rumors Won't Go Away

The Korea Times claims LG Display is going to meet with Apple in the next few days to talk about producing a 7.35-inch display for the rumored iPad mini. This latest rumor corroborates an earlier story from UMD, who reported LG and AU Optronic sent samples of a 7.85-inch display to Apple for approval back in October.

The smaller display will reportedly feature the same resolution as the iPad 2, and will be Apple's answer to the smaller more affordable tablets like the Amazon Kindle Fire and Barnes & Noble nook. A recent survey revealed 44 percent of tablet shoppers are considering buying the Kindle Fire over the iPad 2 this year. And 46 percent of UK iPad owners said they didn't believe they were getting their money's worth, because they hardly use the device at all.

Apple to Launch New Thinner iPad 2 in March, Not the iPad 3?

Time to stock up on your grains of salt, and strap yourself in for a long ride of iPad 3 and iPad 2S rumors. According to the DigiTimes, Apple is planning on launching a new thinner iPad 2 in March, not the iPad 3. The next generation iPad is currently rumored to be suffering from manufacturing problems that will push its release to Q3 of 2012. The iPad 3's rumored 2048 x 1536 Retina display is reportedly proving difficult for Samsung and LG Display to produce, and is the cause for the delay.

iPad 2S

Analysts are also predicting Apple will release an "iPad mini" in 2012. The lower entry-level iPad could feature a 7-inch display with the same resolution as the iPad 2.

These are basically the same iPhone 5 and 4S rumors we heard in back August. Analysts and tech bloggers claimed there would be a newly designed iPhone 5 and a low priced iPhone 4S on the market in October. However, they were supposed to be released at the same time, not months apart.

Will Siri Be Coming to the iPad?

Apple's "Let's Talk iPhone" event did cover more than just iPhones, but Tim Cook and team spent very little time talking about the iPad. And what they did talk about wasn't very exciting. The new "Cards" app seemed like filler when compared to the new voice command assistant shipping with the iPhone 4S. Too bad it's exclusive to that device only.

Siri iPhone 4S

Just because the iPad 2 has the A5 chip doesn't mean it will be getting Siri. Some believe it doesn't even have enough memory to support it. The consensus is Siri will be available with the iPad 3, but I guess there is always hope since there has been no official word from Apple.
