iPad Email and Messaging

At what resolution does the iPad email photos?

You can send your photos from the iPad at full resolution if you copy and paste them into an email. Otherwise, the iPad will reduce the resolution of your photos before emailing.

Depending on the aspect ratio and source of the photo the iPad Mail app will automatically reduce the size to 2048 x 1536 (4:3) or 2048 x 1364 (3:2) before sending the photos. This is approximately 3-megapixel resolution.

How can I send a multimedia message (MMS) from the Apple iPad?

Despite the fact that the WiFi+3G models are connected to a 3G wireless network, such as AT&T in the US, these connections are data only and do not provide traditional mobile / cellular features such as voice calling, SMS, and MMS.

There is, however, a very simple way to send MMS messages from your iPad to friends and family with iPhones and other phones that receive MMS messages. This does not require that the destination phone has email support. By emailing your picture to their phone and not their email, they'll receive it like a normal MMS message.

Can I send SMS text messages using the iPad?

UPDATE: As of iOS 5 (expected fall 2011), iPad owners will be able to send text, picture and video messages through Apple's new iMessage application. These are not true SMS or MMS messages, as they can be sent only to other iOS device owners (iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch).

For those not running iOS 5, right now the answer appears to be no. Even if you have a Wi-Fi + 3G model of the iPad, the AT&T data plan is strictly for Internet access.
