iPad mini and iPad 4 Already Jailbroken

While the East Coast was busy picking up the pieces after Hurricane Sandy this weekend, iOS developers MuscleNerd and Chpwn were concentrating on jailbreaking Apple's newly released iPad mini and fourth-generation iPad. The iPad mini was jailbroken by MuscleNerd only 24 hours after its release, and Chpwn announced he had cracked the iPad 4 on Monday. Both devices were released on Friday, November 2.

Fourth Generation iPad Jailbreak

Both the iPad mini and iPad 4 jaibreaks will remain failbreaks until more exploits can be discovered. This means these jailbreaks are not ready for public consumption. However, this proves the iPad 4′s new A6X chip can be jailbroken, and that progress is being made. Hopefully, it's only a matter of time before an untethered iPhone 5, iPad mini and iPad 4 jailbreak is available to the public.

Three Different Jailbreaks Confirmed for the Third iPad

Friday was a busy day for the jailbreak community. Dev Team member MuscleNerd tweeted a picture of a jailbroken iPad 3 running Cydia 1.1.5. Hacker i0n1c showcased his untethered jailbreak on YouTube (see below), and Chpwn also tweeted pictures of a jailbroken third generation iPad.

Even though this seems like some kind of jailbreaking record, it could be a few weeks before we see a public release. MuscleNerd said there was "no ETA" for his jailbreak, and i0n1c and Chpwn have been pretty silent as well. The Dev Team also warned iPad 3 owners not to upgrade the iOS version their iPad shipped with if they want to jailbreak their device in the future.

New iPad Already Jailbroken

Dev Team member MuscleNerd just tweeted a picture of an iPad 3 running Cydia 1.1.5. While this proves that the new iPad can be jailbroken, it does not mean that there is a new jailbreak right around the corner. It could still take a few months before anything is finalized and it's made public. The screenshot below shows a jailbroken third generation iPad running iOS 5.1. MuscleNerd wrote: "Just a first step, still lots of work to do! No ETA!"

Earlier today we told you that the Dev Team and a few other iOS hackers were working on finding vulnerabilities in iOS 5.1. Pod2g, i0n1c and an unnamed person "close to the Cydia repo scene" have been looking into various unrelated methods to jailbreak Apple's new tablet. The Dev Team also warned new iPad owners not to update its firmware if they want to jailbreak their device in the future.

Geohot Jailbreaks Apple iPad With Blackra1n

Just a few short days ago, iPhone Dev-Team member MuscleNerd demonstrated an initial porting of the Spirit jailbreak by @comex to the iPad. Now George Hotz (aka Geohot) is working on his blackra1n software to jailbreak the iPad.

Seen in the blog photo are blackra1n and Cydia icons (as some have pointed out, probably just a mockup) on Gehot's iPad screen. Proving that he's making progress, Geohot posted keys for the iPad 3.2 firmware and bootrom on his blog with a one-line comment reading, "This is more exciting than a lot of you realize." Only a day later he revealed that "verbose iPads look cool" and tweeted the picture below.

iPad Jailbreak Completed in Less Than 24 Hours

Well, that didn't take long. The iPad is now officially jailbroken on its first day in the wild. Approximately one hour ago, iPhone Dev Team member musclenerd, posted on his Twitter account that a port of the "Spirit" jailbreak developed by comex had been ported to the iPad.

Musclenerd's tweet read "http://is.gd/beaVL initial porting of "Spirit" jailbreak by @comex to iPad", the link pointing to a picture providing rough visual evidence of the jailbreak. Musclenerd has since updated his Twitter account with links to a video showing more of the jailbreak (view the video below).
